Serie A champions

Juventus wasted no time prodding the hornets’ nest. No sooner had they been confirmed as Serie A champions, than staff began handing out bottles of champagne labelled No. 30 – a figure representing how many league titles the club would have won, had two of them not been revoked as a result of the Calciopoli scandal. Last Wednesday saw an enormous Scudetto badge pasted onto the Juventus Stadium bearing three gold stars – each one representing 10 titles.

For the Italian Football Federation, Juventus’ triumph represented a double-edged sword. Arguments of this nature had been inevitable from the moment that verdicts were handed down in 2006, but for the club to adopt such a defiant position represented an open challenge to the federation’s authority. Putting that aside, however, history suggests the people running the national team should never be sad to see Juventus at the fore in an international tournament year.
Including that contentious 2006 Scudetto, three of Italy’s four World Cup triumphs have come in years when Juventus were crowned champions. The team-sheets from each of those tournaments show it to be anything but a coincidence.

In 1934, Vittorio Pozzo’s squad contained nine members of a Juventus team celebrating their fourth consecutive title; it counted five of those – Giampiero Combi, Giovanni Ferrari, Luis Monti, Mumo Orsi and Luigi Bertolini – as regular starters. At Spain ’82, Enzo Bearzot relied similarly heavily on a team which had just claimed its 20th Scudetto – selecting Dino Zoff, Antonio Cabrini, Gaetano Scirea, Marco Tardelli and Paolo Rossi in every game. Claudio Gentile missed only the semi-final, for which he was suspended.

Most recently, in 2006, Marcello Lippi used five Juventus players – Gigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Del Piero – during Italy’s final win over France. Indeed, with three of the club’s players – Lilian Thuram, Patrick Vieira and David Trezeguet – also featuring for the opposition that day, the whole fixture might have been read as one great act of defiance against those who suggested they had not won the Scudetto on merit.

In a sense it is no surprise Juventus players should play such a key role for the national side, as the club have been (by some distance) the most successful in the history of Serie A, regardless of whether you count the 2005 and 2006 titles. But it is also true that they have always relied more heavily on domestic talent than other leading Italian sides. Juventus players have totalled 2,033 appearances for Italy since the national team’s inception; Inter have the second-most with 1,368.

It is a trend that was evident during Marcello Lippi’s second stint in charge of the Azzurri. The manager was criticised for spending so much time at Juventus’ training ground and so little at that of then-champions Inter, when in reality the latter had few players who were even eligible for selection.

Lippi would eventually bow out having overseen what Gazzetta dello Sport described as “the darkest and most terrible day in our football history”, with the 2010 tournament in South Africa seeing Italy fail to win a single game at the World Cup for the first time in their history. The manager had become increasingly cold and intransigent in his approach; his commitment to ageing players who had served him well in 2006, along with a refusal to even countenance a recall for Antonio Cassano, earning him widespread opprobrium.

Euro 2012 football championship now one month away

In the run-up to the Euro 2012 football championship now one month away, much attention is focusing on racism among fans and the potential for violence in co-host nation Poland.

The assumption is that Poland’s hard-core hooligan groups will cause trouble during the championship and abuse foreign fans and players.

Theo van Seggelen, secretary general of players’ union Fifpro, told the BBC recently he was not “100% convinced” that “accidents” would not occur both inside and outside stadiums if the majority of fans watching the matches came from the co-host nations, Poland and Ukraine.

Racist incidents do still occur in grounds across the country but mainly in the lower leagues and they are more infrequent than before.

The Never Again association monitors racism in Poland and its booklet, Hateful, gives a flavour of incidents at grounds.

It describes a derby match from November 2008 in Krakow between the city’s teams, Cracovia and Wisla, whose rivalry is such that it is described here as a “holy war”.

Israeli footballer David Biton of Wisla Krakow celebrates scoring against Ruch Chorzow
Some Wisla fans sang an anti-Semitic song about the supposed Jewish origins of their rivals and when a Cracovia player left the pitch, fans shouted: “To the gas chambers.”

When the match ended Wisla players went over to their fans to thank them, some of them making obscene chants about Jews.

Beforehand, some Cracovia fans made monkey noises at Wisla’s Brazilian player, Cleber, when he was sent off.

But this is not the whole picture. Wisla now have two Israeli players in their first team, and one of them, David Biton, is the club’s top scorer this season.

Most teams have foreign players these days and when they score, whether they are white, black or Jewish, the supporters cheer.

‘Monkey, go back’
According to a recent Fifpro survey of professional players in Eastern Europe, 9.6% of respondents said they had been victims of racism, mainly from supporters. In Poland, the figure was 9.5%.

In the region, 11.7 % of respondents said they had been victims of violence from fans, coaches and management. In Poland the corresponding figure was 6.3%.

I don’t know whether it’s racism or whether people are not used to seeing black people”

Bruno Coutinho
Brazilian midfielder for Polonia Warsaw
Senegalese defender Pape Samba Ba, 30, was assaulted twice in Opole, south-west Poland, when he played for the city’s Odra Opole club.

“I started playing here more than six years ago and then they didn’t have the security,” he told the BBC.

“The fans would scream ‘monkey, go back to your country’. Now it’s changing, the stadiums are getting better.”

Bruno Coutinho, 26, a Brazilian midfielder for Polonia Warsaw who plays in Poland’s top-flight Ekstraklasa division, has never been a victim of racism and says he has a good relationship with his teammates and coaches.

But he did witness racism while playing for Jagiellonia Bialystok in north-eastern Poland in 2009.

“They signed an 18 or 19-year-old black guy from Colombia,” he told the BBC.

“During a pre-season friendly match some of our own fans were making monkey noises at him. It was the first time I had experienced anything like that.”

Coutinho’s dark-skinned brother recently visited him in Warsaw.

“We were walking in the centre and people would look at him like a person from another planet,” he recalls.

“I don’t know whether it’s racism or whether people are not used to seeing black people. I’m not saying it’s everyone or everywhere.”

Bayern Chelsea Live

Chelsea ’s season and future hangs in the balance as the club prepares to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final at the Allianz Arena on May 19.

Fourth place and Champions League qualification via the league are now impossible after the Blues were demolished at Anfield by Liverpool 4-1.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo made several changes to the team that saw off Liverpool on Saturday to win the FA Cup.

The Italian will not have been impressed with some of the performances he saw Tuesday. Michael Essien, Oriol Romeu and Paulo Ferreira did little for their chances of being including in Di Matteo’s squad for the final.

The one thing Chelsea do have in its favor is the fact the team have flourished in Europe, especially under Di Matteo. The Blues have tripped over every hurdle in the Premier League this season but look a different class in the Champions League since that dreadful February night in Naples.

Everyone at Chelsea knows the final will define their legacy at the club and shape the future of the Blues.

Chelsea can overcome Bayern Munich in the final, however, the team is going to need to improve. Here are the four things the team must do better in the final.

oal scorers and creators

You would have to say that Bayern have the edge in this department, as Mario Gomez has racked up 12 goals in the competition compared to just five for Chelsea’s top scorer Didier Drobga. Gomez is just two goals behind leading scorer Lionel Messi, so the Golden Boot will be his if he racks up a hat-trick in the final. Wing wonders Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery have scored seven between them, while the Blues’ Fernando Torres and Frank Lampard have three a piece.

As far as assists go, Ribery stands head and shoulders above anyone in either team with five to his name. That probably explains why he is such a marked man: the Frenchman has suffered more fouls, 42, than anyone in the tournament. The next most fouled is Lionel Messi on just 26.

Top scorers:

Bayern

12 – Mario Gomez
4 – Arjen Robben
3 – Frank Ribery

Chelsea

5 – Didier Drogba
3 – Fernando Torres
3 – Frank Lampard

Top assists:

Bayern

5 – Franck Ribery
2 – Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben, Holger Badstuber and Toni Kroos

Chelsea

3 – Frank Lampard
2 – Florent Malouda

Previous meetings:

The sides have met just once before in the UEFA Champions League, a 2004/05 quarterfinal tie that produced no less than 11 goals over the two legs. Chelsea advanced 6-5 on aggregate. Neutrals will certainly hope to see a similar goal return in Munich on May 19…

The Blues also have a pretty good record against German teams in the competition, with seven wins from 13 matches, while Bayern’s record against English teams has seen them pick up 13 wins from 35 matches.

The last time the Bavarians faced English opposition in the final of the Champions League was back in 1999 when Manchester United famously scored two late goals to secure a dramatic 2-1 win in Barcelona.

2004/05 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal:

1st leg: Chelsea 4-2 Bayern (J Cole 4, Lampard 60 70, Drogba 80; Schweinsteiger 52, Ballack 90 pen)
2nd leg: Bayern 3-2 Chelsea (Lampard 30, Drogba 80; Pizarro 65, Guerrero 90, Scholl 90+5)

Chelsea won 6-5 on aggregate

Tournament history

There’s no question that Bayern have the superior heritage in the competition, winning it four times from eight appearances in the final, the most recent of which was in 2010 when they lost Jose Mourinho’s all-conquering Inter Milan. Chelsea, in contrast, are making just their second appearance in the final after 2008’s heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Manchester United in Moscow.

El Clasico 21 april in Camp Nou – El Clasico yhe history

Barcelona’s game with Real Madrid at the Nou Camp has been brought forward by a day to April 21, Madrid have confirmed. The El Clasico clash, which will take place between the two legs of the Champions League semi-finals, has been moved from Sunday to Saturday.

Barcelona travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the first leg of their last-four meeting three days earlier on Wednesday April 18, with the return fixture on Tuesday April 24.
Madrid face Bayern in the other semi-final on April 17 and 25.
A statement on Madrid’s website read: “Real Madrid will face Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Saturday, April 21 at 2000 in the 35th round of the season.”

History El Cl?sico

El Cl?sico (Spanish pronunciation: [el ‘klasiko]; Catalan: El Cl?ssic, pronounced: [?? ‘k?asik]; “The Classic”), also known as El derbi espa?ol, is the name given in football to any match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. It is contested twice a year in the Spanish La Liga competition, and more often if the clubs meet in other competitions. Other than the UEFA Champions League Final, it is the most followed club football match in the world, watched by hundreds of millions of people.
The rivalry comes about as Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain, and the two clubs are two of the richest, most successful and influential football clubs in the world. Barcelona leads the count in official titles won with 75 trophies (plus three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups considered the predecessor to the UEFA Cup and recognized by FIFA), while Real Madrid has won 74 trophies. Along with Athletic Bilbao, they are the only clubs in La Liga to have never been relegated. They are sometimes identified with opposing political positions, with Real Madrid viewed as representing Spanish nationalism and Barcelona viewed as representing Catalan nationalism.[3] The rivalry is regarded as one of the biggest in world football.

The challenge between Real Madrid and Barcelona has long been surpassed the sporting dimension, thus elections to these clubs presidency are strongly politicized.[9] As early as the 1930s, Barcelona had developed a reputation as a symbol of Catalan pride and identity, opposed to the centralising tendencies of Madrid. In 1936, when Francisco Franco started thegolpe against the democratic Second Spanish Republic, the president of FC Barcelona, Josep Sunyol, member of the Republican Left of Catalonia and Deputy to The Cortes, was arrested and executed without trial by Franco’s troops[9] (Sunyol was exercising his political activities, visiting Republican troops north of Madrid). FC Barcelona was on top of the list of organizations to be purged by the National faction, just aftercommunists, anarchists, and independentists. During the Franco dictatorship, most citizens of Barcelona were in strong opposition to the fascist-like r?gime. Phil Ball, the author ofMorbo: The Story of Spanish Football, calls El Cl?sico “a re-enactment of the Spanish Civil War.” A similar analogy was made by American author Robert Coover, which described the 1977 match between the “archrivals” FC Barcelona and Real Club Deportivo Espa?ol as “more like a reenactment of the Spanish Civil War than a mere athletic event.”

Though the first socialist party in Spain was founded in Madrid, almost all the ideas that have shaped the country’s modern history -republicanism, federalism, anarchism, syndicalism and communism- have been introduced via the region of Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital. During the dictatorships of Miguel Primo de Rivera and of Francisco Franco, all regional languages and identities were frowned upon and restrained. In this period, FC Barcelona gained their motto m?s que un club (English: More than a club) because of its alleged connection to progressive beliefs and its representative role for Catalonia. During Franco’s regime, however, the blaugrana team seemed to be granted profit due to its good relationship with the dictator at management level.

The links between senior Real Madrid representatives and the Franquist regime were undeniable; for most of the Catalans, Real Madrid was regarded as the establishment club, in spite of the fact that presidents of both clubs like Josep Sunyol and Rafael S?nchez Guerra, suffered in the Spanish Civil War.This image was further affected by the creation, in 1980, of the fascist-leaning Real Madrid hooligan group. For different but not contradictory reasons, for many people living in the rest of Spain, FC Barcelona considered as the alternative pole to Real Madrid’s conservatism. According to a pan-Hispanic poll released by CIS (Centro de Investigaciones Sociol?gicas), Real Madrid’s followers tend to adopt right-wing views, while Barcelona fans are politically closer associated with the left-wing.
